Fred C. Beyer High School Justin Berona |
Justin Berona, most well-known as JB, has been a student of percussion since the 4th grade. Mainly playing in the concert band, he also took up playing the drum set and quickly got hooked. He enjoyed the aspects of performing as well as creating music that everyone could relate to. It wasn’t long before he was introduced to the marching percussion activity. Thanks to his older brother, Henry, he witnessed the high energy and awe-inspiring sport. He quickly joined the Ustach Middle School Drumline during the 7th grade where he marched the snare drum and won the local CVGPC Junior High School Division. He fell in love with the activity and continued the next year where he became the section leader. He continued through all four years of high school with the Beyer High School Marching Band from 2003-2007. He performed in the concert band and wind ensemble and marched snare drum for the marching band and winter drumline. In 2004, his freshman year, the drumline placed 2nd in the nation in the Scholastic A division at the WGI World Championships. The Beyer drumline quickly gained recognition throughout the activity and was an Open class finalist in 2005 after being promoted mid-season. The next two years, JB was the percussion section leader, where he helped the marching band win two consecutive WBA championship titles. In his senior winter drumline season he helped lead the unit to a surprising 3rd place finish at the WGI 2007 Championships in Open class. During all four years the drumline won four consecutive CVGPC local championship titles. Justin now attends CSU Stanislaus and has become a percussion staff member with Beyer. He appreciates all the teachers and influences that helped him along the way: Dave Flores, Nate Bourg, Shekhar Khedekar, Oliver Bullock, Chris Arriola, Chris Cyr, Tom Gierke, Shaun Gallant, Henry Berona, Andrew Lopez, Murray Gusseck, Patrick Mester, and Brandon Price.
